Qing dynasty; reigned 1661–1722

Qing emperor who broke the Three Feudatories and set the Russian border

Kangxi is an era name, not a surname: a Manchu emperor who broke the feudatories, took Taiwan, and signed China's first treaty with Russia.

Who was Kangxi Emperor?

The Kangxi Emperor was Xuanye of the Manchu Aisin Gioro clan, born in 1654, enthroned as a child in 1661, and ruler until 1722. Kangxi is the era name, meaning the years of his reign, not his personal name. He took government out of the regents' hands in 1669, when the regent Oboi was arrested. The reign that followed, sixty-one years, is the long consolidation of the Qing: a Manchu dynasty governing China, holding the steppe, and deciding what to do with Taiwan and with Russia on the Amur. He used Confucian teaching as an instrument. He was not a Chinese literatus who had won an examination.

From 1673 to 1681 he fought the Revolt of the Three Feudatories, the near-breakup of the dynasty by Wu Sangui and the other Chinese generals who had been left in charge of the south. He refused a peace that would have split the empire. In 1683 his admiral Shi Lang defeated the Zheng regime and brought Taiwan under Qing control. In 1689 the Treaty of Nerchinsk, negotiated with Jesuit interpreters on the Qing side, fixed a border with Russia and ended the fighting around Albazin. In 1670 he had issued the Sacred Edict, sixteen short moral maxims to be read in the villages. The long commentary often bound with them is a later emperor's work.

Key works

The Sacred Edict 圣谕十六条

Sixteen short Confucian maxims issued in 1670, ordering filial conduct, lawful behaviour, and respect for the village compact. They were read aloud to gather the population, and the expanded commentary, 圣谕广训, was issued by his successor Yongzheng in 1724.

Moral maxims as administration

The Sacred Edict uses Confucius as a public curriculum. Filial piety and lawful work are posted like orders, and this is Kangxi's link to the Confucian line: not philosophy for its own sake, but a Manchu court teaching Chinese moral language.

Finish the internal war

The feudatories were allies who had become nearly independent kings. He chose a long civil war over a negotiated partition, and Taiwan came after that victory, not before it.

A treaty on the steppe frontier

Nerchinsk is a strategic choice: fix the Amur border with Russia in writing, with European witnesses, rather than chase raids. The link to the Mongol frontier is practical, and he had more than one north.

Famous episodes

The Three Feudatories

History

1673–1681

Wu Sangui, enfeoffed in Yunnan, rose in 1673, and the other southern feudatories followed. The war lasted eight years, Wu died in 1678, and Qing armies took the last strongholds in 1681. Kangxi had rejected calls to trade land for peace. The dynasty no longer shared the south with its old allied kings.

Taiwan

History

1683

The Zheng family had held Taiwan since Koxinga took it from the Dutch. In 1683 Shi Lang's fleet defeated the Zheng navy and the court accepted the surrender of Zheng Keshuang. Kangxi did not command the boats in person. He did decide that Taiwan would be a prefecture of the empire rather than a separate coast.

The Treaty of Nerchinsk

History

1689

Qing and Russian envoys met at Nerchinsk. Jesuits in Qing service interpreted. The treaty set a border in the Amur region, provided for the Russian withdrawal from Albazin, and opened regulated trade. It is the first Qing treaty with a European power, and the Chinese, Manchu, and Latin texts are the primary record.

Myths vs facts

Often told The record

Kangxi is his personal name.

Kangxi names the era, 1661–1722. His personal name was Xuanye. He is the Shengzu emperor in the temple tradition, so the era name marks the reign and Xuanye marks the man.

The thick book called the Sacred Edict is a philosophical work he composed.

In 1670 he issued sixteen short maxims. The familiar amplified text, with commentary for public lecture, is Yongzheng's 1724 expansion. The sixteen are Kangxi's text.

He was simply a Chinese emperor who won a civil war.

He was a Manchu ruler of the Qing. The feudatories were Chinese military allies of the conquest, Taiwan was a maritime holdout, and Nerchinsk was a border with Russia. The reign is consolidation across those frontiers, conducted partly in Confucian language.

Takeaways

  • Use the era name and the personal name for different things.
  • Finish the internal war before you open the next frontier.
  • Put a border in a treaty when raids cannot hold it.
